Cucumber Chana Dal Idli – South Indian Savory Rice Cake with Cucumber & Lentils


Chana dal- 1/2 cup

Urad dal flour- 1/3 cup

Rice flour- 1/3 cup

Grated fresh ginger- 1 tsp

Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp

English cucumber- 1, grated

Carrot small- 1, grated

Salt as needed

Lemon juice 1 tbsp

Oil- 2 tsps

Hot water- 2-3 tbsps


Method: Wash and soak the chana dal in water overnight. In a bowl, mix the urad dal flour and rice flour. Add 1/2 cup water and mix well to make a thick batter. Cover and let it ferment overnight. Drain the soaked chana dal and grind with grated ginger to a coarse paste using little water. Add the fermented batter and the chana dal paste to a bowl.  Add salt & turmeric powder along with grated carrot & cucumber, 1 tsp of oil, & lemon juice. Grease the idli plates with 1 tsp oil. Place 1-2 cups of water inside the pressure cooker / idli steamer, cover and let the water boil. Pour a ladleful of the batter in each idli mould. Open the lid of the steamer, place the idli stand and steam for 10 minutes. Remove and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Unmold the idlis with a sharp edged spoon. Serve with chutney and a glass of milk.
