Kuzhalappam/ Kerala Style Rice Flour Cannoli

This tubular crispy yummy snack is one of the traditional snacks of Kerala. These deep-fried goodness has a crispy & crunchy texture that tastes amazing with your evening tea!


Rice flour – 1 cup
Sesame seeds- 1 tbsp
Coconut, grated- 1/4 cup
Pearl onions/shallots/small red onions- 6 nos
Garlic cloves- 2
Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
Salt- to taste
Oil- for frying

Method: Grind coconut, shallots, garlic, and cumin seeds into a fine paste and keep aside. In a pan, slightly dry roast the rice flour on low flame for 5 mins. Boil 2 cups of water. In a bowl, add the rice flour, sesame seeds, salt and mix well. Add the boiling hot water little by little and knead well to a smooth dough. Divide the dough into small lemon size balls. Grease little oil on a plastic wrap and place the ball in between the plastic wrap and roll it into a small thin circle using a rolling pin. Using the handle of a spoon, roll one side and bring the other side and seal the edge one over the other by slightly pressing. Repeat the process for the remaining balls. Arrange them in a plate. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Deep fry the rolls in batches until golden brown in color, flipping on both sides. Drain them to a paper towel. Once it cools down, store in airtight container. Serve as a snack with hot tea.
