ഉണക്ക ചെമ്മീൻ മുരിങ്ങക്കാ കറി / Kerala Style Dried Shrimps & Drumsticks Curry

An authentic delicious seafood delicacy cooked in drumsticks and coconut gravy that goes well with steamed rice. 

 

Ingredients:
Unakka chemmeen/dried prawns – 1/2 cup, cleaned
Muringakka/drumsticks- 2 sticks, cut into medium size pieces
Green chilies – 2 
Shallots -3, thinly sliced
Grated coconut – 3/4 cup
Tomato – 1, finely chopped
Chili powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
Tamarind – gooseberry size
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Whole dry chilies – 2
Curry leaves – A sprig
Salt – To taste
Water – As needed

Method: Soak the tamarind in half a cup of water and keep aside. In a claypot, add the dried prawns, drumsticks, green chilies, 1 cup of water, & salt. Cook on medium flame stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, grind the sliced shallots, grated coconut, chili powder, turmeric powder, & coriander powder into a smooth paste adding little water. Once the veggies and the prawns are cooked, add the prepared coconut mixture along with chopped tomato and tamarind water & mix until well combined. Cover with a lid and cook on low flame for another 5-6 mins until the tomatoes are soft. Remove from flame and keep aside. Heat oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds, dry chillies, and curry leaves. Pour this tadka over the curry and mix in. Serve hot with steamed rice.
