വാഴയിലയിൽ മുങ്ങി അവിയലിൽ പൊങ്ങിയ മൊഞ്ചത്തി മത്തി / Kerala Style Peppery Sardines Steamed in Banana Wrap

A flavorful & delicious seafood recipe to please all fish lovers where sardines are wrapped in banana leaf and cooked with spicy masala!

 

Ingredients:
Mathi/chaala/sardines- 1/2 kg
Tomato- 1,
Pepper powder- 2 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Shallots – 10
Ginger- 1″ stick
Garlic- 4 pods
Coconut milk – 5-6 tbsp
Coconut oil- 2 tbsp
Lemon juice- 2 tsp
Banana leaf- As needed
Salt- To taste

Method: Clean, wash, and drain the sardines. Cut the sardines into 2-3 pieces. Marinate the fishes with turmeric powder, pepper powder, lemon juice, and salt. Leave it aside for 10-15 mins. Meanwhile, steam the tomato and remove the skin. Cut it into small pieces. In a blender, add the tomatoes, shallots, ginger, garlic, coconut milk, & coconut oil into a smooth paste. Marinate the fishes with half of the prepared paste and keep it for 1 hour. Wilt the banana leaf on fire for 2-3 seconds until it becomes soft. Take a big piece of wilted banana leaf and add in 2 tbsp of the prepared paste in the center. Layer the marinated fish on top of this paste. Fold the banana leaf to make a small packet. Fold again on the top and bottom. Tie the parcel with a string. Place it seam side down in a steamer and steam the parcel for 15-20 mins on low flame. Turn the pockets and cook again for another 15-20 minutes until the flavor of the banana leaf penetrates into the fishes. Remove from heat and serve with lemon wedges.
