This favorite street side food in North India is a healthy, spicy, crispy, & filling tea time snack to munch along with your piping hot cup of evening tea.
Moong dal/yellow split lentils – 1 cup
Freshly grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Onion- 1, finely chopped
Green chilies – 2, finely chopped
Ginger- 1 ” piece, finely chopped
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida / hing – 1/4 tsp
Besan / Bengal gram flour – 1 tsp
Oil – As needed
Salt- To taste
Water – As needed
Method: Soak the moong dal for 3-4 hours or overnight. Drain the dal. In a grinder, add the drained dal, ginger, green chilies, enough water, and salt. Grind this into a coarse mixture. Transfer this paste to a bowl. Add the chopped onions, turmeric powder, chili powder, hing, & besan flour and mix well. Heat oil in a frying pan. When the oil is hot, make small patties on your palm and slowly drop them into the oil. Fry until crispy and golden in color. Drain on kitchen towel. Serve hot with chutney of your choice.
